Schafer has a variety of wild life including grizzly and black bear, moose, wolves and other critters. Unattended or during the night, the campground can be subject to prowlers. Use of the bear boxes and a clean camp are imperative. Air horns work well for the first line of defense, especially at night. I highly recommend carrying bear spray at all times and a firearm when hiking or camping alone. In the last 25 years I have confronted numerous bears, but have not had to discharge my bear spray.
